Previously owned by Tesco and now part of TalkTalk's TV store offering, blinkbox was a Movie and TV Streaming service offering a large library of movies and box sets (including latest releases). The service ran on a variety devices including iOS, Android, Windows Store, Xbox, Chromecast, and their dedicated Web App.
I started working on blinkbox in January 2014 as part of their web team. My main responsibilities on .com were the frontend and backend layers of the client web app. Maintaining a strong front-end framework for the browser, whilst extending a robust .net solution using recognized design patterns and SOLID principles.
My front-end work included improving the CSS framework, designing a new component based CSS methodology derivative of the BEM methodology. It also included delivering reusable markup, improving performance (time to first byte, critical rendering path and high framerate) and supporting displays ranging from retina display monitors to smartphones.
Additional projects on blinkbox.com included building the UI a new web player for customers to watch movies and tv in the browser at a point when existing DRM compliant solutions such as Silverlight and Flash were being deprecated in favor of HTML5 technologies.
blinkbox helped me grasp core concepts around writing backend code efficiently and at scale. It helped me learn to appreciate code quality and has taught me how to write solutions to a high standard.
As an avid movie fan, working at blinkbox was a personal favorite project of mine.
